Summary: It was worth all the effort to make Debi’s 15th birthday special.

Organising a birthday party for Debi hadn’t been easy, but the kid had deserved it, with everything she had to deal with, living this way. It had cheered her up, made her feel special, given her a chance to meet some of her friends face-to-face for the first time, made her feel less isolated.

Harrison was still slightly amazed the cake he and Gunther had made had not only looked pretty good, but proved edible, despite neither of them ever having baked anything before.

The photographs Suzanne took of the party would be a permanent reminder of a special night.

Aww, I'm so glad Harrison worked so hard to give Debi a special day. She'll never forget that.

She never will. Harrison was hampered by food being scarce, cake being a luxury item, the baker having died, the baker's husband never having baked anything, and how were they to get hold of chocolate when that was even more of a luxury than cake and would cost the earth? Then there was the problem of buying the ingredients, reading a recipe that was smudged so they didn't know how many eggs to use... An astrophysicist and an old man, who'd never even met before, attempting to bake a birthday cake. It was adorable! But they were trying so hard!

Thank you! The birthday cake was Harrison's idea, so he had to be the one to figure that out, but he's an astrophysicist, so I was half expecting it to be inedible. He and Gunther succeeded though! Sheer determination.
